The 85m superyacht navigating the Norwegian fjords

For many charter guests, particularly those who have already spent several seasons following the traditional routes, there is growing interest in less conventional cruising grounds.

Among them are the Norwegian fjords, where the 85.3-metre SilverYachts superyacht Bold is offering an itinerary shaped by landscape, privacy and access to nature. The cruising ground presents a quieter alternative to the Mediterranean summer circuit.

The Yacht Charter Market team sat down with Captain Paul Verry to inquire what makes a charter through the fjords onboard Bold so special.

A notably different charter experience

For Captain Paul Verry, Norway offers a charter experience that is notably different from the established Mediterranean circuit. He describes the country as “pristine in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re sitting in it,” with fjords, waterfalls and glass-flat water set against steep green cliffs. As a New Zealander who still considers his home country the most beautiful country on earth, Norway is one of the few places to have made Verry question that view.

“The Med will always have its place, but it’s a different kind of charter,” notes Verry. “For clients who’ve done the classic Med itinerary a few times, Norway is something else entirely. You’re not bouncing between beach clubs; you’re cruising between fjords, glaciers and little fishing villages, with landscapes that still feel untouched.”

That contrast helps define the appeal of Bold’s Norwegian programme. Rather than positioning Norway as a replacement for the Mediterranean, Verry frames it as a destination for charter guests seeking a different rhythm, shaped by scenery, privacy and access to nature rather than the established social infrastructure of the summer circuit.

Space is also a significant part of the experience. At the height of the Mediterranean season, many of the best-known anchorages are heavily frequented. In Norway, Verry says, guests can still “drop anchor in a fjord, with mountains all around, you experience total silence, and feel like you’ve got the place to yourself.” It is a level of privacy and seclusion that is increasingly difficult to find in the Mediterranean during peak summer.

Norway’s offering

In Norway, the charter experience is shaped less by a fixed coastal circuit and more by the setting around the yacht. Verry describes it as “nothing like a normal summer charter, the yacht becomes your base camp.” Much of the appeal lies in the range of activities that can be built into the programme: taking tenders close to waterfalls, hiking to elevated viewpoints overlooking the yacht, visiting quaint Norwegian villages, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, biking, and cold-water plunges. Rather than using the yacht only to move between destinations, guests can begin and end each day from a quiet anchorage, with the programme adjusted around the weather, the scenery and their preferred level of activity. “You wake up in a quiet fjord, enjoy breakfast overlooking snowy peaks and spend the day out exploring. The evening onboard can be spent enjoying the sauna, and dinner overlooking the anchorage with no other yachts in sight.”

The experience onboard Bold can also be adapted to different styles of charter. For more active guests, the itinerary can centre on hiking, watersports and tender excursions. The superyacht’s helipad is a significant part of her appeal in Norway, allowing guests to view the fjords from above and gain a clearer sense of their scale. As Captain Verry notes, “the scale of these places only really lands when you’re looking down on them.”

For those who prefer more leisurely cruising and enjoying the setting itself. “If guests want to be active we build it around adventure; if they’d rather just take it in from the deck, it does that just as well,” says Verry.

Designed for fjord cruising

For Verry, Bold’s suitability for the region lies in a combination of range, efficiency and operational flexibility. “She’s fast and very efficient, light for her size, so we can cover real distance without burning through fuel, and we do it with low emissions,” he says. He sees that as an important part of the yacht’s fit with Norway, where the natural environment is central to the destination’s appeal and environmental awareness is increasingly part of the cruising conversation. “Bold fits that forward-facing mindset rather than fighting it,” he adds.

Those qualities become particularly relevant in a cruising ground where distances can be significant, conditions are changeable and much of the experience is shaped by the surrounding scenery. Bold’s interior spaces are also important in this context, allowing guests to remain connected to the landscape even when the weather is less suited to being outside.

“We have large windows in the loft and the winter garden; guests can stay inside, warm and comfortable, and still enjoy the view,” he explains. “Norway isn’t about perfect sunshine every day. Some of the best moments come with low clouds and mist, watching waterfalls flowing off the cliffs. Being able to take all that in from inside the yacht changes how you experience the charter.”

The response to Bold’s Norwegian itinerary

The response to Bold’s Norwegian itinerary has so far been “really positive”, particularly among guests looking beyond the familiar Mediterranean programme. For Verry, this points to a clear appetite among experienced charter clients for destinations that feel more distinctive than the standard summer circuit. “Norway has that wow factor; once clients see the imagery of Bold sitting in the fjords, it just clicks. She looks at home here.”.

The interest in chartering Bold in Norway reflects a wider desire for charters that feel more personal and memorable. “What we’re hearing is people want privacy, nature, adventure - something they’ll really remember.
