Timeless adventure: The oldest superyachts available for charter

While the majority of charter guests understandably seek out the newest, boldest, most luxurious yachts to spend their holidays on, there is another segment on the market for those who enjoy a yacht with a little more history to her name. Yachts that have hosted or been owned by the likes of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, fashion icon Maurizio Gucci, and King Juan and Queen Sofia of Spain on their honeymoon.

This week, the Yacht Charter Market team takes a look at some of the oldest charters on the market, built between 1900s and 1969.

Kalizma | 1906

Built in 1906 by Ramage & Ferguson, the 50-metre Kalizma has an incredibly storied past, having served in the British Royal Navy in both world wars, making her ideal for charter guests who love a little history. Her current owner, who purchased the yacht in 2020, invested in a complete refit, which saw her taken back to her bare hull. From her exterior woodwork down to the pain - every element of Kalizma’s exteriors and interiors were restored.

Kalizma was once owned by Richard Burton, who reportedly bought the yacht for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. The couple namedthe yachts after their three daughters: Kate, Liza, and Maria. Charter onboard Kalizma.

SS Delphine | 1921

Delivered in 1921 by Great Lakes Engineering Works, SS Delphine is world’s last fully operational steam-powered yacht. She measures 78.55-metres and can accommodate 12 guests across 12 staterooms, with a crew of 24. Over the last century, the yacht has been meticulously restored, ensuring her classic character remains whilst incorporating modern comforts onboard.

SS Delphine sports all the wellness facilities you expect on a luxury vessel, including a hammam spa, sauna, gym, beauty salon and a deck Jacuzzi. Her swimming pool features mosaic flooring. She just left Palumbo’s facilities in Marseille, where she completed an extensive four-year refit. She is for charter with Aqua Marine.

Over the Rainbow | 1930

With signs of the second world war still visible on this historic yacht, Over the Rainbow is one of the oldest charter yachts on the market today. With more than 11 owners and six name changes throughout her 95-year-history, she is the ideal yacht for those who love history, culture, and a unique charter experience.

Built by Dickie & Sons in 1930, the 35-metre superyacht has a wooden hull and superstructure and is captained by Tim Cooter and his two Dachshunds, Duke and Sandy. The three have been onboard the yacht for a decade. She is for charter with TJB Superyachts.

Christina O | 1943

Christina O, built in 1943 by Canadian Vickers, is a classic motor yacht that stretches 99.13-metres and is easily one of the most recognisable yachts out on the water. Formerly known as Argo, she served as a Canadian naval vessel during World War II, before being acquired by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who transformed her into one of the most iconic private yachts of her era.

Throughout her history, Christina O has hosted a number of prominent guests, including Sir Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy. More recently, the yacht has appeared in major productions including The Crown and Triangle of Sadness. She is for charter with Morley Yachts.

Arctic | 1969

One charter yacht that is truly designed for exploration is Arctic. Built by Schichau Unterweser AG in 1969, the 87.58-metre superyacht has undergone extensive refits throughout her lifetime, including a recent year-long refit in Germany. All of her yard visits have centred around modernising her systems while preserving the character of her steel build. She is for charter with Ahoy Club.

A closer look at Silver Yachts’ Reduce

Currently for sale and open for viewing in Monaco is the aluminium catamaran Reduce. Delivered in 2024 by Silver Yachts, the yacht features interiors by the yard herself and exterior design and naval architecture by Espen Øino. 

She has a volume of 483 GT and can cruise at a maximum speed of 24 knots, powered by four Volvo Penta engines. The catamaran has a range of 3,200 NM at a cruising speed of 18 knots. In 2025 she won the Special Jury Award at the Monaco Blue Wake Awards for her fuel efficiency, thanks to her low-resistance hull.

Reduce can accommodate up to 12 guests, supported by a crew of eight. Her spacious deck, open-floor plan and generous deck spaces all make her an excellent proposition for the charter market.

Reduce is for sale for €21.7 million.

SS Delphine for charter with Aqua Marine
