Explore the South Pacific onboard Southern Cloud

While the SuperYacht Times & Yacht Charter Market team prepare to step onboard the many charter yachts attending the Palm Beach International Boat Show, starting today, we take a moment to reminisce about our recent trip to Sydney, Australia, where we had the opportunity to step onboard a classic schooner. Southern Cloud, built in 1990 by the Danish yard Faenoe, stole the show. Her three 37-metre masts tower over the rest of the motor yachts at the show as her white bow glitters under the Australian sun.

Onboard the schooner

Stepping onto Southern Cloud, her wooden main deck feels warm under my bare feet. I am greeted by an ice cold glass of water with lemon and the yacht’s friendly crew, who take me on a tour of the trideck yacht.

I make my way inside, the airconditioned space a refreshing welcome from the Sydney Summer air. The pale, plush carpet feels soft underfoot and creates a warm contrast with the dark wooden interiors. A bar sits starboard, stacked with ingredients to make any cocktail guests can dream of.

Southern Cloud can sleep 12 guests across six staterooms, cared for by a crew of seven. The owner’s stateroom, on the lower deck, sits on the aft with large windows that bring the sea right into the stateroom. When the windows are opened, it makes an ideal spot for a morning coffee in bed with the fresh ocean breeze. The other five staterooms offer a variation of queen size beds and twin beds, making Southern Cloud plenty versatile, able to host both a group of friends or a family.

Yet the real charm of the three-masted schooner is her main deck. With an overall length of 39.72 metres, and 35 metres of deck space, there is ample room to accommodate guest wishes: spend time lounging alone on the fore deck, reading a novel or soaking up some sun, or gather for al fresco dining on the partially shaded aft deck. Possibly my favourite spot on the yacht is the aft, where sunbeds overlook the sea, ideal for catching some sun and enjoying the view.

While the schooner carries the air of an authentic sailing yacht, having been built in the 90s by Faenoe, her extensive refit, undergone in 2017, followed by a visit to Rivergate & Marinas Shipyard in 2021 and 2024 for maintenance all ensure she is fully equipped with all the modern luxuries charter guests can expect onboard.

Chartering the South Pacific

Southern Cloud is currently based in Sydney, Australia, but will make her way up to Brisbane in April, before heading towards Fiji in June, where she will cruise until October. In November she will once more cross the Pacific, back down to Australia, along the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsundays, before being back in her home harbour in Sydney for the duration of December to February.

The sailing yacht sports plenty of gear for fun: Southern Cloud has a fishing and diving vessel, and onboard you’ll find all the gear you need for some fun in the water. There is snorkeling gear, proper diving gear and an onboard compressor, as well as (spear)fishing gear, paddleboards, seadoos, jetskis, an e-foil, and more.

Later in the week, with the Sydney Charter Show all wrapped up, I spotted Southern Cloud at her finest: cruising around the Sydney Harbour, on her way out of the bay and onto further charter adventures. Having a range of 2,000 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 8 knots, Southern Cloud is a great choice for exploring Sydney, Australia and the greater South Pacific.

Between sky and sea, Stéphanie Coutas opens a new chapter.

The Re Leone, the first yacht from the house, marks the beginning of a journey where the studio’s signature language breathes on every deck and in every cabin. Raw natural materials - stone, solid wood, and noble textiles - answer one another and dialogue with the energy of the open sea. Designed as an extension of life at sea, this floating sanctuary brings bespoke furniture and enveloping textures into an entirely reimagined universe. From the spacious salons to the intimate cabins, each space unveils a new vision of yachting. More to come on this voyage at sea very soon.
