The MEDYS roundup: Q&A with GYA President Michael Skoulikidis 🇬🇷

This week, we sat down with Michael Skoulikidis, President of the Greek Yachting Association, to reflect on last week’s Mediterranean Yacht Show.

MEDYS 2024

This year's MEDYS was busy, with an impressive turnout of yachts of all sizes and types. And are you pleased with this year's turnout?

The MEDYS has been consistently big over the last years as there is a specific number of available berths in Nafplion.

The only numbers that might vary slightly are the combined L.O.A. and, as well as the number of yachts on the waiting list.

That being said, we are looking forward to the development of a marina in the area which would lead to extra berths and an even bigger show.

Michael Skoulikidis

Brokers and industry professionals from all over came to Nafplion for the show. Could you provide some stats about this year's attendees?

This year saw us welcoming 760 charter professionals to the MEDYS and our attendees represented a total of 30 countries. It has become a truly global affair with visitors arriving from destinations including Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.

In future years, is there a specific category of yacht you would like to see more of in the lineup, or a specific boat you would love to attend?

What I would personally like to see more of in Nafplion are “greener” yachts. Electric propulsion vessels and hydrogen-fuelled motor yachts, if and when they are available.

The show is situated in the public port of Nafplion. If you had the opportunity to host the show in a more private setting, is this something you’d consider, or is the relaxed atmosphere of MEDYS part of the fabric of the show?

The laid back atmosphere is one of the things that attendees love the most about Nafplion. Members of the public can indeed admire the yachts from a distance (outside the cordoned area which is accessible only to those with a show badge) and we would like to keep it that way.

It is important that the local community embraces and actively supports the event, which it currently does. They are very proud of the show.

MEDYS 2024

Over the course of MEDYS' lifetime so far, what kind of role have you observed the show have in the Greek yachting industry, in terms of increased bookings, expansions and interest?

The Show has made a great impact so far. It promotes the Greek yachting industry all across the world, increases bookings and revenue by showcasing our amazing fleet, inspires charterers to look beyond staples such as the Cyclades, and has placed the wider area of the Peloponnese firmly on the map with destinations such as Nafplion being added to itineraries.

What is your favourite thing about MEDYS, and for someone who has not yet attended, why would you recommend they consider it next year?

My favourite thing about the MEDYS is the fact that the yachts are literally lined up. No separate marinas, no multiple quays…

An amazing selection of yachts with a Greek charter license that can cover the entire East Med, all within walking distance of everyone’s hotel. A very “compact” proposition that is ideal for doing business but also for effortless networking.
