Cruising in cobalt blue: Step aboard the brand new Baglietto

During this year’s MYBA Charter Show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with captain Jon Copsey onboard the brand new 41-metre Baglietto Sui Generis. Marking her debut charter season, Captain Jon shares how he came to captain the unique yacht, why he fell in love with her and what lies ahead for the cobalt blue motor yacht.

Jon’s career started back in 2009 as a deckhand, by 2015 “I was a chief officer onboard a few larger yachts, and became a relief captain onboard Lucky Lady, a 62-metre Oceanco” shares Jon, “from there I started wanting my own captain’s job.” Starting with Robusto, a 34-metre Custom Line, Jon captained the charter vessel for nearly two years before moving on to a new challenge: a privately owned 67-metre motor yacht. “The larger yacht wasn’t for charter, but I gained a lot of experience managing a bigger boat with a bigger crew.” Eventually, after some more years of experience as a (rotating) captain, Jon decided it was time for a full-time senior position.

It was then that the owner of the brand-new 40.93-metre Baglietto, Sui Generis, reached out. Joining the crew in February, a month after delivery, “I immediately loved the project, and seeing the pictures, she looks so cool, almost like a little Transformer; a robot in disguise.” Yet what was most enticing about joining Sui Generis was how enthusiastic the owner was: “he’s so keen, he absolutely loves the boat, it’s his baby.”

Stepping onboard the cobalt blue Baglietto, the summer crew was already onboard, “I felt blessed to have them.” From there, Jon focused on filling the additional crew positions, including a deck stew and a chief officer. “The boat sells itself, she looks mint,” Jon notes, “but it’s the crew that is the most important thing, because the boat can look as amazing as she does, but the guest experience is all about how the crew handles them; and that I think we got right.” Proud to captain the brand new vessel, Jon notes that “the yacht sells itself, especially in regards to charter.”

Captaining cobalt

Having left the yard and going right into a boss-trip, Jon has been figuring out the pros and cons of captaining a brand new vessel. “It’s totally different, to be honest, because everything was always already in place on previously captained vessels,” Jon shares, “the system, the set-up, crew and owner expectations.” With Sui Generis, Jon has the opportunity to “set the boat up how I want and set expectations for myself and the crew.’

The trickiest part of captaining a brand new vessel just might be understanding the owner’s expectations. Currently on their very first boss-trip in Greece, Jon notes how “you’re trying to make everything the best it can be, but simultaneously you’re still figuring out not just the owners preferences, but also the yacht itself; she only came out of the yard early April.”

Captaining a brand new superyacht, with an all new crew, requires patience: “you’re slowly adapting your own way to do things, including how to manage the crew, understanding owner preferences, but also understanding the yacht herself.” Successfully captaining a yacht is an endless conversation between captain and vessel.

Onboard the Baglietto

The superyacht’s name, Sui Generis, meaning ‘of its own kind’ in Latin, is more than fitting to her entire design. Besides her cobalt blue exterior, she also features a personalised interior, a process during which the owner was very involved. “He wanted the masters on the second deck, accompanied with two walk-in closets and a spacious saloon with no fixed furniture,” shares Jon.

Sui Generis’ saloon, located on the main deck, features an open space designed for relaxation and bringing people together. With a spacious lounging area and a small bar, the saloon, continuing the yacht’s blue-and-white colour scheme, is the ideal spot to wind down after a day of soaking in the sun. Floor-length windows give a bright and airy feeling to the entire space.

Forward from the saloon sits the owner’s suite, outfitted with a private office, walk-in closet and full-beam master stateroom. The remaining four staterooms, two doubles and two twins, sit on the lower deck, and can accommodate eight guests. One of the double staterooms borders a twin and can be converted into a large VIP suite. Each stateroom features a soft colour palette with pale wood panels and flooring. Various shades of blue accent each of the staterooms, connecting the interior with the yacht’s exterior design.

The upper deck features the interior dining area, where a marble-topped table immediately catches one’s eye. Alongside the table is another seating area, ideal for a night cap or post-dinner drink. The pale, circular carpet reflects the circular wood carving that decorates the ceiling.

Outside living

Sui Generis was designed for outdoor living. She features plenty of deck space and has two pools: an infinity pool on her aft, of which the floor can be raised to be level with the aft deck, and a large pool on her sundeck, able to fit up to ten guests. The sundeck also features a bar, “we can plug the DJ deck into the yacht’s speakers, and blast all around the yacht.” If you ask nicely, Captain Jon just might be your disc-jockey. The furniture on the sundeck is movable, and the space can transform from a relaxing lounge area into a grand dance floor.

On the main deck aft, next to the infinity pool, there is a shaded lounge area with large plush sofas, ideal for a morning coffee, an afternoon cocktail or simply lounging the day away whilst hearing the soft sound of the waves. Because her exterior furnishings aren’t fixed, the crew has the opportunity to set up the yacht in any way that suits the guests, whether for a family charter, a party charter, or a boss trip.

Another highlight of Sui Generis is her toy collection: “you name it, we’ve got it,” laughs Jon. The yacht carries two seadoo jet skis, fliteboards, seabobs, a wakeboard, various inflatables and towables, as well as a Funair climbing wall, slide and a chase boat, which can be used for deep sea fishing expeditions. For onboard entertainment, the motor yacht features an outdoor cinema, a laser firing range, and the sundeck nightclub.

Ready for charter

The agenda for Captain Jon and Sui Generis to spend some more time cruising around Greece on boss-trips and along the Western Mediterreanean for the bulk of the summer charter season. In the Autumn, Jon will cruise Sui Generis back to La Spezia, where she will spend the winter doing some additional warranty work, fine tuning some last details and preparing her for her second charter season next summer. After that the idea is to make the crossing to the Caribbean for the winter.

For now, Captain Jon and the Sui Generis crew are getting to know the brand new vessel, along with her owner: “The boss is so excited to get onboard,” shares Jon, “he’s in touch a lot, and it’s so great to have him invested and supporting the crew.”
