An Utterly Remote Charter Experience
Explore French Polynesia onboard the 52-metre motor yacht JeMaSa
Scattered across the South Pacific is the French Polynesian archipelago, stretching over a hundred islands and 2,000 kilometres. Located halfway between South America and Australia, chartering around French Polynesia is the true definition of remote cruising. All that charter you need is a superyacht that houses all necessary amenities, an experienced crew, and plenty of space for your entire family or friend group: a superyacht the likes of JeMaSa.

Explore the South Pacific onboard JeMaSa
After a transformative refit earlier this year, which altered everything but her hull, the 52-metre motor yacht JeMaSa is ready to charter the waters of the South Pacific. Captained by Juan Koegelenberg, JeMaSa is sailing towards Tahiti where she will island hop her way down to New Zealand for the Southern Summer and on to Papua New Guinea after that. This state-of-the-art vessel is ideal for intrepid explorers, lovers of remote travel and those who enjoy ultimate luxury both on- and off-board.

If you’re going to traverse the South Pacific, you might as well do it in style; a superyacht with everything you need: a skilled crew, amenities and toys for endless entertainment, and the comfort of home while out at sea. The 52-metre Australian superyacht, originally built by H.M.A. Naval Dockyard in 1973, sports a warm yet fresh design after her extensive, year-long refit, which took place between Gold Coast City Marina and The Boat Works, and was delivered by Liquid Yacht. “In my 32 years in the industry, this is the largest, most challenging refit,” notes Captain Juan.
Having captained for the same owner for 21 years, Juan Koegelenberg is very proud to sail another yacht for the family. Not just that, but Captain Juan is also very familiar with French Polynesia, having chartered here for at least ten seasons. Throughout the years, the captain has “turned a lot of rocks around in a lot of places, so we know the area quite well.” His favourite spot, however, the captain wants to keep a secret as not to overcrowd his hidden gem.

Onboard JeMaSa
While her exterior has a militaristic look, her brand new interiors, instead, sport a soft, beige colour palette, designed by Misha Merzliakov Yacht Design. Stepping onboard JeMaSa feels like coming home, with plush silk carpets in each cabin and warm, oak flooring throughout the entire yacht, complementing her teak external decks. Her layout is oriented to invite guests to come together, whether to relax on the sundeck, an alfresco dinner with breathtaking sunsets, or watching a movie under the stars.
JeMaSa can house up to 12 guests across 7 state rooms which exude tranquility and effortless elegance while using organic materials. The interior refit was tasked with creating a family-friendly space that is perfect for hosting groups eager to adventure together.

Managed by a crew of 16, Captain Juan notes he’s “very blessed, I’ve got great longevity amongst my crew, several of my crew members have been with me for eight or ten years and have come along with me.” An ode not only to the space and amenities allocated to crew, but also to Juan’s captaining skills. “My second captain on rotation started as a deckhand on the first version of JeMaSa, worked his way up and came to SuRi with me before joining me back on the new JeMaSa.” The captain notes how a crew that works well together is the key to running a smooth and successful charter yacht, “ultimately, it’s a team effort.”

Chartering across French Polynesia
To start off her charter season, JeMaSa is initially cruising around French Polynesia’s 118 islands, with a keen eye on Tahiti. With a territory as big as Western Europe, yet of which 99 percent is water, French Polynesia is truly a unique charter destination. Its islands are divided into three groups: the youngest islands that emerged from the Ocean and have little-to-no shallow waters; the ‘middle age’ islands, where the islands have slightly sunk, thereby gaining a reef; and the oldest islands that have completely sunk underwater but rest close enough to the surface for visitors to take a stroll or enjoy snorkelling in shallow waters.
Speaking with Manoa Rey, Research and Niche Marketing Coordinator for the Tahiti Tourism Board, he notes that Tahiti “is really somewhere you can disconnect and it’s accessible year-round. There is no terrorism, no piracy and you won’t be chased by paparazzi.” With a current visiting fleet of 50-60 superyachts per year, Manoa is eager to grow the number of annual visitors. Tahiti gets minimal rain that is frequently interrupted by large bouts of sunshine, making the island and her neighbours accessible, and even more private, in the off-season.

One thing that sets not only Tahiti but all of French Polynesia apart, is the culture’s connection to the ocean. Manoa highlights that “there’s a deep respect towards the ocean and nature in general; for the government, it’s a priority to protect the ocean.” Not just that, but in 2006 French Polynesia established the Fakarava Biosphere Reserve, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, made up of seven coral atolls that serve as a shark sanctuary and a space where biodiversity can flourish.
“Tahiti, and the rest of the South Pacific, isn’t your typical charter destination,” Manoa notes. “I think it appeals to a specific type of guest, because there is not a lot of nightlife, nor is it a shopping destination.” Therefore visitors chartering the South Pacific onboard JeMaSa are in luck. While there may not be as many luxuries on land, JeMaSa makes up for it in bountiful amenities, under guidance of the yacht’s very own gym master. From water sports to scuba diving, or hopping on a tender or going for a snorkel, she can provide guests with anything, ensuring they are always entertained when at anchor. Additionally, JeMaSa houses a full fishing gear inventory, jetskis, wakeboards, a kneeboard, and towing tubes to provide plenty of fun. For guests who prefer lounging on the beach, they can do so with a full barbecue and beach lounge set that the crew will prepare on any of the remote islands.

With a variety of islands, ranging from the five star resorts on Bora Bora, to the shores of Tetiaroa, housing natural sanctuaries for birds and marine life, there is an island for every kind of visitor. Yet to explore French Polynesia onboard a superyacht the likes of JeMaSa is to truly experience what it means to enjoy a luxurious, adventurous, utterly remote holiday.
JeMaSa is available for charter through Y.CO.
